Gohan is the first son of Goku and Chi Chi. We see him for the first time at the beginning of DBZ as a young boy of 4. When Raditz arrives, Gohan is taken hostage, and his hidden potential is revealed. The blow he delivers to Raditz enables Goku and Piccolo to win. Following the battle with Raditz, Goku dies and Gohan is taken by Piccolo for special training, in order to prepare for the arrival of Vegeta and Nappa. Piccolo makes Gohan more independent by leaving him in the wilderness alone for months. After the survival training is finished Piccolo trains Gohan to fight. The two grow quite fond of each other during this year.
During the battle with Nappa, Gohan loses confidence, and lets the other fighters down. However, Gohan never becomes as confident and determined as his father. We see another occurrence of this lack of confidence versus Cell. Conceivably Gohan could have been the strongest fighter in the universe, but he constantly feels pressure from his mom to concentrate on his academics. Because of this Gohan probably never reaches his full potential. He has a younger brother, Goten, and eventually marries Videl and they have daughter named Pan (DBGT character).
